UWCF Visits Residential Care Home for Special Kids

Date: 24.02.2018

On 24 February 2018, a snow storm tried its best to frighten us on our trip – a UWCF team, volunteers of detdom.info and youngsters from the Solomianskyi District Children and Youth Creative Centre of Kyiv. We were flying through the snow-covered fields with experienced drivers. We didn’t want to go back as we knew that there were people who were waiting for us and who were as nervous as we were – that had to be our first meeting in person. Loaded with numerous gifts we were eager to bring, we were running a race with that snow storm.

Volodymyr Korbut, Director of Nova Borova Children’s Residential Care Home (for girls), kept phoning us throughout our journey, feeling concerned about us, but as soon as he told us that alongside grown-up girls we were also expected by children (as a reminder, Puhachiv Children’s Residential Care Home has just recently been reorganized resulting in the relocation of some girls to Nova Borova Children’s Residential Care Home) the snow storm stilled.

Mr. Korbut open-heartedly welcomed and invited us to his office where he gave us an insight to the history of the residential care facility and told how they had been raising funds for capital repairs in the premises, building up and upgrading material supplies and technical facilities, as well as educational materials. Besides, Mr. Korbut emphasized that the residential care home is in continuous search of charitable support. We were also told that the facility had a land plot with total area of 6 ha. “Director’s work is like 24/7 because the Internet is available seven days a week, – he laughs. – If I counted hours, guess it all wouldn’t work out at all, and you wouldn’t see any of these wonderful greenhouses, playgrounds, sports ground, saw mill, workshops ...”

Mr. Korbut’s main focus is not on money, position, social status or appearance – it is on children. We should not associate a residential care facility with something dull and bad – it is a separate country living its own life. Children eat, sleep, spend their free time here in numerous hobby clubs and interest groups. Of course it all cannot replace mum and dad to little inmates, but the entire team led by the director are doing their best to give children such simple essentials as safety, protection, and confidence.

Mr. Korbut feels extremely insulted when asked a question how he works with this kind of inmates. “What kind do you mean? They are the same kind as all other children, – he says. – They have same talents, eyes, wishes and dreams. I think that it is a good step taken by the head of the Solomianskyi District Children and Youth Creative Centre of Kyiv because those children who have visited us will understand that this place should not be negatively associated. I would like to thank United World Cultures Foundation for the fish tank which is much needed by our girls; volunteers and young people from Solomianskyi District Children and Youth Creative Centre of Kyiv – for mercy and sensitivity they have showed to the children who need help! The support you are giving shows your care about the problems faced by orphan children”.

As a present to UWCF, Mr. Korbut gave us a funny brownie hand-made by the residential home’s inmates and meant to protect calm and peace in our office and enhance mood. “Now this good house spirit will guard and protect United World Cultures Foundation, influence the well-being of our organization and of all people we cooperate with. You are welcome, dear brownie, in your new home! This place I have visited today is a very strong-minded rehabilitation and spiritual institution that cultivates kindness and wisdom”, says Liudmyla Lysenko, UWCF representative.

“To achieve any goal you need to take a certain number of steps on your way, and each step is a basis for taking the next one. Nova Borova Children’s Residential Care Home is a good example of such gradual, step-by-step development”, says Oksana Zolotukhina, Supervisor of detdom.info, sharing her impressions.
