Home LET’S IMPROVE CHILDREN’S LIVES PROGRAM / Our First Art Practice at Bila Tserkva Children’s Residential Care Center in 2020

The first art practice at Bila Tserkva Children’s Residential Care Center in 2020 organized by Social Harmony and UWCF

Date: 25 January 2020

In Ukraine, there are more than 165,000 children under 18 who have disabilities and need special conditions for their lives, studies, and social involvement. For this reason, alongside medical and psychological care, these kids need also help in learning how to communicate, make friends, and behave in social environments.

On 25 January 2020, United World Cultures Foundation grouped together our volunteers, joined efforts with our friends from Social Harmony, and made a trip to Bila Tserkva. Boys who are patients of the local residential care center were already looking forward to our arrival.

Bila Tserkva Children’s Residential Care Home is a facility for social, psychological and medical rehabilitation of disabled children. The center takes care of boys aged between 8 and 35 who suffer from severe disorders such as infantile cerebral paralysis, Down’s syndrome, epilepsy, autism, moderate and profound mental retardation, psychological and physical development disorders.

Despite their chilling diagnoses, the boys are surprisingly positive-minded. They study, talk to each other, rehearse dances and performances, and they are always happy to have visitors.

On our joint trips with volunteer association Social Harmony, we bring art practices and good cheer to the kids. Living conditions at Bila Tserkva Children’s Residential Care Home are good – this is not one of those facilities that look scary on the photos. This place is cozy, clean and warm.

The only thing the local mentors cannot give the kids is communication. The boys stay at the care center for 5 days a week, and at weekends they are taken home by parents. However, they can’t independently go out to the city, travel somewhere, or make friends online (most of them are not able to read or write). So every visit of our volunteers is always much awaited and appreciated at the center.

This time, during the art practice, the boys were making holiday cards, as well as singing songs and hugging a lot.

As a reminder, United World Cultures Foundation regularly visits residential care centers for special kids. Do you want to help? Do you want to become a volunteer, give financial support or make in-kind donations? Email us at пошту uwcfua@gmail.com. Remember – it is easy to be kind!
