Our Phone Buddies

Date: October 2020

We at United World Cultures Foundation continuously keep an eye on how the living standards change for the most vulnerable social groups of children and youth.

Today, 101 persons are placed on complete state provision at municipal institution Puhachiv Psychoneurological Treatment and Residential Care Centre, a facility that is located in village Berezneve of Korosten District in Zhytomyr Region and takes care of women suffering from mental retardation at the imbecility stage and Down syndrome, of disability groups IІІ-ІV.

Amid the lockdown, the psychoneurological treatment facility is working behind closed doors, with all visits prohibited.

Our campaign “Let’s Unite against the Coronavirus 2019-nCoV (COVID-19) and Walk to the Health Land” under the UWCF program “Walking to the Health Land” has once again donated the most essential pharmaceuticals worth UAH 79,704 to municipal institution Puhachiv Psychoneurological Treatment and Residential Care Centre.

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned the local girls’ whole lives around and created yet new obstacles for their social adaptation (field trips, visits by volunteers, parties to celebrate holidays). In these challenging lockdown conditions, our combined team of UWCF staff, students of Medical Faculty No. 3, Paediatrics Department of Bogomolets National Medical University, volunteers from detdom.info, and leaders of students’ self-governments from educational institutions of Solomianskyi District headed by teachers of the Children and Youth Creativity Palace in Solomianskyi District of Kyiv, are doing our best to give the girls as much attention as possible. Striving to support those who have been isolated, volunteers call them on the phone and share some useful information or just to ask how they are doing. Thanks to those phone conversations, the girls feel supported and not forgotten by their friends. A telephone call has become one of the most efficient responses to the COVID-19 impacts.

“The pandemic threat has forced us to abandon any visits to the facility’s charges and common celebrations. We had to cancel already planned events, adventures, trips, and parties for many birthday celebrants, because the safety always comes first”, comments Oksana Zolotukhina, volunteer supervisor of detdom.info. “Of course, it is not so much fun to give up your plans, but even the unwelcome lockdown restrictions are no reason to pull the plug on birthday celebrations. Quite the opposite, together with UWCF volunteers and staff, we have organised an unforgettable party for local patient Olia. And we had quite a few ideas on how to do it”.
