UWCF First Art Workshop: Pastel by Andriy Kulagin

Date: 23 November 2019

Talented children need to be supported! At United World Cultures Foundation, we are guided by this motto. We don’t miss a single chance to help those who really need – and most importantly want – to develop and learn something new.

On 23 November, United World Cultures Foundation organized an art workshop for children with drawing talents at Parkovy Kyiv International Convention Center. This was only the first event of this kind for our foundation but (spoiler) far from the last one.

The workshop was given by one of UWCF benefactors and partners, a renowned Ukrainian artist Andriy Kulagin.

Andriy Kulagin is a prominent figure in the world’s fine art environment. His skills range from crisp graphics to picturesque landscapes and still-life paintings. However, portraits hold a special place in the Kulagin’s artwork. The portrait of Pope John Paul II by Andriy Kulagin is now kept in the Vatican Library.

What did they draw?

The workshop’s topic was the depiction of a bunch of autumn flowers that had to be made in the pastel technique. Mr Kulagin has been working with this medium for a number of years so he has already come up with his own tricks and quirks to master the technique. As the workshop results showed, a lot of students embraced what he taught and even tried to apply those tips in their works. Olga Shevchenko, the artist’s wife, was also helping the children in their practice.

Who participated?

The workshop was free of charge. This is important because all children who wanted to participate had this opportunity. Their parents had only to write a message to the event’s organizers or leave a comment under the respective post on Facebook.

Over 6 hours, 28 children attended the workshop. Half of them were members of the junior group, from 6 to 12 years old, and all were from different art studios. The senior group consisted of teenagers, from 13 to 17. All members of the senior group were students of Taras Shevchenko State Art School.

How did it go?

Drawings of the young masters invited to the event exceeded all expectations. Despite everyone was using the same life model – a bunch of natural flowers – none of the drawings looked alike. The creative prism of these child artists sometimes was a welcome surprise even for Mr Kulagin.

We would like to give our special thanks to everyone who helped in holding the workshop! We thank Andriy Kulagin and Olga Shevchenko for conducting the workshop; Parkovy Kyiv International Convention Center for the really comfortable and beautiful venue; volunteer photographers Zhanna Yevmina, Tetiana Shavlovska, and Pavlo Kholodov, Televsesvit TV channel and the Chernets family for the wonderful photo and video reports; Olena Tsarenko for her help in organizing this event; Taras Shevchenko State Art School for its students’ participation in our event; volunteers Diana Bilodedova and Daryna Yalova for their help during the event. Thanks to all the children who participated in the workshop and their parents!
