UWCF Helps Children in Avdiyivka School No. 1

On 13 October 2016, in the course of our trip to Avdiyivka, Donetsk Region, UWCF team members visited the local comprehensive primary and secondary school No. 1.

Having just entered the school’s premises, we heard children’s clear voices and laughter. As we found out later, these were younger students participating in a sporting competition arranged to mark the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Of course, we couldn’t pass by and looked in for a few minutes to see the kids and present a multimedia projector, a mobile screen and some household supplies, to the school.

After that, we also visited upper school students in the Biology and Geography classrooms where we brought globes and microscopes. While gratefully accepting the gifts, teachers pointed out that they had really lacked this equipment and now it would facilitate a more interesting and illustrative teaching process.

This school No. 1 is one of the oldest educational institutions in Avdiyivka. It was founded as far back as in 1939, and earlier was owned by the School Department of the Southern Donetsk Railways. Over its history, it used to bear different numbers, such as 52 and 101. From 1939 to 1983, the school was secondary and from September 1983 it became a junior secondary school.

For many years now, the Avdiyivka’s comprehensive school No. 1 has been headed by a talented teacher and schoolmaster Ms Sima Kryvorotko. Working under her guidance, the school’s teaching staff consists of 17 dedicated professionals who continuously upgrade their skills, search for more efficient teaching and upbringing methods, as well as share experience with their colleagues from other city’s schools by holding methodical meetings.

With the standard enrolment of more than 350, the school currently has 162 students who both receive knowledge and actively participate in the student self-governance, school-level and city-level activities. The school’s sports teams take winning places in field-and-track athletics and football competitions.

The Avdiyivka’s comprehensive school No. 1 is a place where even the youngest children have their dreams come true and make important tasks happen. UWCF hopes that all dreams these kids have will become reality and the magical atmosphere we had a chance to enjoy will always reign within the school’s walls!
