It is easy to do good things when there are like-minded people beside you. That’s what we all believe – Anita from Nigeria and Alex from Tanzania, leaders of students’ governments in educational institutions of Solomianskyi District, headed by teachers of the Children and Youth Creativity Palace in Solomianskyi District of Kyiv, volunteers of detdom.info and United World Cultures Foundation. Having bought a box of bananas, some sweets and gifts, we went to visit our friends – girls from Communal Institution Puhachiv Psychoneurological Treatment and Residential Care Center. This is a facility located in Berezneve village of Korosten District in Zhytomyr Region that takes care of children suffering from mental retardation at the imbecility stage and Down syndrome, of disability groups IІІ-ІV. The young volunteers have been visiting the girls for more than twelve years now. It all started with just a simple wish to help children.
Now they go there as frequently as they manage to collect aid. Many schoolchildren and university students, including foreigners, join us in our trips. Any other people willing to give out some hugs can also feel free to come along. There are many girls at the center who cannot take care of themselves and need some sanitary and hygiene products, such as sanitary pads and adult diapers.
The first person to meet the visitors at Puhachiv Psychoneurological Center was local patient Olya who monitored on the phone our departure from Kyiv and arrival at the treatment centre. After that, other girls poured out of the building and started hugging the welcome guests. We peeled up and unfolded the gifts – sweets and bananas – and gave them out to the children in groups. The girls looked so pleased and happy. Most ate their treats and bananas right away. They enjoyed taking photos with their presents and started asking the visitors when they would have their next trip to Kyiv – once a quarter we usually arrange a tour to the capital city for our princesses.
After all the treats were given out, each girl hospitably invited us to her own group. Girls of different age – from 26 to 36 – live in the rooms, and are considered to be the adult group. In their free time, they do some handicrafts and watch TV. Every visit is always welcome here – the girls enjoy talking to guests and sharing about their lives.
That entire day was full of unforgettable emotions for both the children and the volunteers.
UWCF volunteer Anita who is a student of Medical Faculty of Karazin Kharkiv National University held a training for student government leaders of educational institutions in Solomianskyi District, briefing the girls on the basics of hypertension prevention and teaching them how to correctly measure blood pressure. After the training, the participants started practicing by first measuring each other’s blood pressure, and half an hour later the center’s patients joined our future doctors.
High schoolers were playing various games with the kids and simply having fun together.
As a must of our every trip – we handed over presents, toys, sweets, clothes, footwear, and other necessary things. The young princesses were happy and kept warmly thanking for everything.
“…I saw there incredibly sincere children with kind hearts. I am so happy I had this chance to participate in the charity visit…”, shares his impressions our volunteer Alex who comes from Tanzania.
We welcome everyone willing to join us and take part in similar activities. Let’s give out smiles together!
